Terminal System Routing Switch Protocol ES-IS is launched by ISO, supporting the terminal system to exchange intermediate system configuration and routing information to push the route selection and relay function of the network layer in the ISO network environment. The ISO network contains terminal systems, intermediate systems, regions, and domains. The terminal system refers to a user equipment, an intermediate system refers to a router. The local group of the router is called "region", and multiple regions form a "domain". ES-IS combines with CLNP, IS-IS, and IDRP, providing a full routing process for the entire network.

ES-IS provides the following solutions for practical issues:

Supporting the end system discovery is connected to it and is responsible for sending NPDUS to the intermediate system of the subnet destination. The terminal system found that other terminal systems on the same subnet. Support Intermediate System Found that the terminal system connected to each subnet supports the terminal system in the case where multiple intermediate systems can be accessed, which intermediate system is used to forward NPDUS to special destination.
